Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

What is a stingless bee, and how does it differ from a common honey bee?

The ong dú (tribe Meliponini, known in English as the stingless bee) is a small native bee whose sting has degenerated, so it practically never stings people. It nests in pots of tree resin instead of the hexagonal wax comb of the ordinary honeybee, which is why its honey has entirely different properties.

Why does stingless bee honey taste sour? Has it gone bad?

No. That crisp tartness is a natural signature of stingless bee honey, coming from its higher water content and a light fermentation inside the resin pots. Honey up to standard tastes softly tart with a sweet finish; only a sharp sourness, heavy bubbling or a strong alcoholic smell points to poor storage.

Why is stingless bee honey so much more expensive than ordinary honey?

Because the yield is so low. Stingless bee colonies are small and each hive gives only a modest amount of honey over a whole year, while a single ordinary honeybee colony can give many times more. Harvesting also has to be done by hand, one resin pot at a time, with no bulk centrifugal extraction.

What is the QR code on each hive for?

Every hive has its own QR code; scan it with your phone camera and it opens that hive's exact record: origin, mother hive, colony split date, the farm keeping it, its current status and the complete care log. A recorded event can never be edited or deleted, only added to — so the history stays intact even when the hive moves farm or changes owner.

After buying a hive, do I have to keep it myself?

Not at all. You can take the hive home and raise it yourself with our technical team guiding you through taking over the colony, or choose managed hosting so the hive keeps being cared for at the farm. Either way the hive keeps the same QR code and you can follow every activity on the traceability page.

How can I tell the honey I bought is genuine stingless bee honey?

Every honey batch is tied to a specific source hive and farm in the system. Look up the batch code or scan the QR code and you will see which hive the honey came from, on what date and who harvested it. That is verification by data, not just by promises.

How should stingless bee honey be stored?

Keep it somewhere dry and airy, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Because its water content is higher than ordinary honey, close the lid tightly after each use and keep it in the fridge in hot weather. Do not heat the honey at high temperatures, as that destroys its active compounds.

How do I get in touch to visit the farm or learn stingless beekeeping?

See the Services section for our farm tour packages, technical transfer and farm setup options, then send us your details through the Contact page. Our team will discuss the schedule and the plan that fits the scale you have in mind.
